Kolkata, July 23 (NationPress) In a collaborative effort with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended a woman at the Ranaghat railway station in Nadia district, West Bengal, for possessing smuggled gold with a value exceeding Rs 57 lakh. This operation took place on July 22, near the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB).
“On Tuesday, the BSF received intelligence indicating that a woman was transporting a consignment of smuggled gold via train. We promptly monitored her movements to Ranaghat and alerted the RPF. The woman was arrested around 12:55 PM, found in possession of five gold biscuits weighing 583 grams. The total market value of the confiscated gold is Rs 57,68,785,” stated N K Pandey, DIG and spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier, BSF.
The RPF identified the woman based on the information provided by the BSF and detained her. She was taken to the RPF office, where female constables conducted a search leading to the discovery of the gold.
“During a joint interrogation by the BSF and RPF, the woman admitted that she received a call from a man at 10:30 AM that morning, instructing her to deliver the consignment. She was promised Rs 1,000 for the task. After boarding the train at Harishnagar Halt, the gold biscuits were handed to her. She was supposed to deliver them to an individual at Simurali station, roughly 60 km from Kolkata,” the DIG explained.
Authorities suspect that the gold consignment was en route to Kolkata. The seized gold biscuits have been turned over to the appropriate department for further legal action.
“The BSF not only secures the border but also combats cross-border criminal activities such as infiltration, smuggling, and human trafficking. Our personnel perform their duties effectively despite numerous challenges. I encourage those living near the border to report any information regarding gold smuggling,” Pandey stated.
The BSF has established a “Seema Saathi” helpline number 14419, where any information can be shared. Additionally, individuals can send text or voice messages to the WhatsApp number 9903472227. Those providing credible information will receive appropriate rewards, and their identities will be kept confidential.
