Patna, July 13 (NationPress) The authorities in Bihar's Samastipur apprehended a young man on Sunday for allegedly issuing a death threat against Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan via social media, according to officials.
The suspect, named Mohammad Meraj, was taken into custody from the Teghra area in Begusarai.
Durgesh Dipak, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer-cum-Station House Officer of the cyber cell, verified the arrest, stating that Meraj had made the threat from a social media profile called 'Tiger Miraj Idrisi' on July 20.
This incident came to public attention when YouTuber Daksha Priya interviewed Chirag Paswan, leading Meraj, who follows Daksha Priya, to comment, "On July 20, I will kill Chirag Paswan. I plan to blow him up with a bomb."
Taking the death threat seriously, LJP Spokesperson Rajesh Bhatt filed a formal complaint at the Patna Cyber Police Station, prompting an FIR based on a request by the party's Samastipur district president, Anupam Kumar aka Hira Singh.
In response to the complaint, police initiated an investigation and traced Meraj to Teghra in Begusarai.
According to the SDPO-cum-SHO, "We received a lead from another social media user who commented that the individual threatening Chirag Paswan is mentally unstable. We quickly located this user and questioned him. He provided information about Mohammad Meraj's location in Begusarai."
The police then raided the area and apprehended him in Teghra. After preliminary questioning, Meraj has been handed over to Patna Police for further inquiry to uncover the motive behind the threat and whether he acted on someone else's instructions.
This arrest has somewhat alleviated concerns regarding the safety of Chirag Paswan.
Following the threat, LJP(RV) MP from Jamui Assembly constituency, Arun Bharti, called on the state government to enhance Chirag Paswan's security through a post on social media.
The Patna Police are currently interrogating Meraj to gather more information about the threat directed at Union Minister Chirag Paswan.
