Indian Railways Launches Kavach on Prayagraj-Kanpur Route, Targets 160 Kmph Speed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) - The Indian Railways has proudly rolled out the homegrown Kavach Automatic Train Protection system along the 190-kilometre stretch of the Prayagraj–Kanpur route, a significant advancement in enhancing the safety and speed of train operations, as announced by the Ministry of Railways on Monday.
The activation of the Kavach system took place on the busy Delhi–Howrah corridor.
Train No. 14163 was the first to operate under this new system, and the General Manager conducted an on-ground inspection from Subedarganj to Manauri station to evaluate its performance.
High-ranking railway officials, including divisional and headquarters personnel, were present during the launch, which is regarded as a crucial step towards improving safety and facilitating higher train speeds of up to 160 kmph on one of India's most trafficked railways.
In this initial phase, the Kavach system will be implemented on eight pairs of trains, such as the Chauri Chaura Express and various long-distance services. Additional trains, including Vande Bharat services, will be progressively integrated in the forthcoming months.
Prior to its launch, the Indian Railways conducted thorough testing to guarantee the system's dependability.
This included runs with WAP-7 locomotives pulling various configurations of LHB coaches, along with trials involving a 20-coach Vande Bharat train.
Successful passenger trials were also carried out, achieving over 20,000 kilometres without any incidents.
The Kavach system is an indigenously created safety mechanism aimed at preventing accidents stemming from human error.
It has the capability to autonomously apply brakes if a train disregards a danger signal and continuously monitors speed and signals to ensure safe operations.
This initiative is part of the government's larger effort to modernize the railway network under the Make in India campaign.
To date, Kavach Version 4.0 has been successfully deployed across more than 1,450 route kilometres, covering vital sections of the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah corridors.
The Indian Railways has pledged to expand this system to additional routes. The next phase will see Kavach introduced on the Ghaziabad–Tundla section as part of Mission Raftaar, which aims to enhance train speeds and operational efficiency across the network.
