North India: The New Epicenter for Green Building Innovation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) A notable surge has been observed in the adoption of green buildings across North India, with the National Capital Region (NCR) taking the lead, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh, as highlighted by industry experts on Wednesday.
Uttar Pradesh has achieved a remarkable milestone with 1,673 IGBC-registered projects encompassing 1.78 billion sq. ft., showcased at the GreenTech Summit 2026 organized by the CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This reflects the state's commitment to integrating sustainability into its urban development.
Delhi has contributed significantly with 794 projects covering 0.63 billion sq. ft., further establishing its role as a pivotal player in India's green building initiative.
The NCR region has exhibited even greater scale, boasting a total of 2,475 registered projects that span 2.81 billion sq. ft. of green building space.
Growth in Uttar Pradesh is largely concentrated in significant urban areas, with Noida and Greater Noida collectively accounting for 748 projects, Gurugram for 651 projects, and Faridabad alongside Ghaziabad contributing 282 projects.
The summit convened leaders from industry, policymakers, technological innovators, and sustainability specialists aimed at enhancing the adoption of climate-responsive technologies throughout India’s constructed environment.
As India progresses towards its Net Zero goals and the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, the summit emphasized the critical role of green technologies, low-carbon materials, digitalization, and integrated design strategies in fostering a sustainable and resilient future.
"As we strive for Viksit Bharat 2047, with much of our infrastructure still to be developed, we have a unique chance to design our cities using climate-resilient approaches, low-carbon technologies, and digital advancements. The choices we make today will shape the sustainability and resilience of our future urban landscapes,” stated Baljit Singh, Co-Chair, IGBC Delhi Chapter & Executive Vice President, Brookfield Properties.
The rapid growth of green buildings is bolstered by forward-thinking policy frameworks in Uttar Pradesh. These policies include an enhanced Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for projects that receive pre-certification or provisional certification as IGBC Gold or higher, alongside an additional 5 percent FAR provided at no cost by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) for projects attaining comparable ratings.
According to a recent report, green building certifications, energy monitoring, and stricter material compliance across the Asia-Pacific region are driving up baseline fit-out costs.
