Mumbai, March 4 (NationPress) As “Karz,” featuring the late Rishi Kapoor, marks 45 years since its debut in Hindi cinema, director Subhash Ghai proclaimed that the film remains as vibrant as ever and that he has no intention of remaking it.
Reflecting on the film, which is set to be showcased at the Red Lorry Film Festival, Ghai mentioned to IANS: “Karz” has continually resonated with audiences through the years, appealing to young children, the youth, and emerging filmmakers due to its musical storyline, captivating plot, and remarkable performances. It remains a leading film in our collection of 42 works at Mukta Arts. It feels as fresh as today.
Subhash reminisced about how, following its 1980 release, numerous critics and industry leaders remarked that “Karz” was “far ahead of its time.”
“I am thankful to witness it still being among the beloved films in 2025,”
he expressed.
“Karz” is a romantic thriller featuring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, and Simi Garewal, who plays the notorious Kamini Verma, the murderous spouse.
When asked about the possibility of remaking the 1980 film, he responded: “I wouldn't remake it.”
The narrative centers on Monty, who uncovers a shocking revelation about his past life, where he was murdered by his gold-digging wife, leaving his family destitute.
“The story I conveyed was one of reincarnation, employing sound and scale in a manner that resonates with every generation. Audiences are astute; they cannot be deceived,”
the director noted.
He acknowledged that music was crucial to “Karz.”
“Exceptional music lends a film its longevity. Therefore, the credit belongs to its music, lyrics, and on-screen presentation, ensuring it remains relevant,” he stated.
Discussing the film festival, the director remarked: “All aspiring filmmakers across platforms should engage with old classics during festivals and interact with creators, like those of Karz, which is the opening film at the Red Lorry Film Festival this year to understand why films like these will always attract audiences across generations.”
