New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) In a major relief for Telugu actor Manchu Mohan Babu, the Supreme Court on Thursday granted him anticipatory bail concerning the case of an assault on a journalist.
The Apex Court issued the order on a petition submitted by Mohan Babu, contesting the decision made by the Telangana High Court, which had rejected his request for anticipatory bail.
The High Court had delivered its ruling on December 23, 2024. The seasoned actor had requested anticipatory bail citing health issues.
This veteran actor, who is also a former Member of Parliament, faced charges of attempted murder after an incident where he assaulted a reporter by seizing his microphone. The reporter sustained injuries and was hospitalized.
The incident transpired on the night of December 10 during a disturbance at Mohan Babu's residence in Jalpally, Hyderabad, amid a conflict involving his actor son Manchu Manoj.
The Rachakonda Police initially lodged a case under the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 118 (1) (causing harm with hazardous weapons or substances) against Mohan Babu, later adding section 109 (attempt to murder).
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed based on a complaint from reporter M. Satyanarayana.
Mohan Babu attacked the television reporter when he visited the actor's home in Jalpally to report on the ongoing dispute between Mohan Babu and his son Manchu Manoj.
Mohan Babu was admitted to the hospital that same night due to high blood pressure and anxiety, but was discharged two days later, where he extended an apology to the journalist.
On December 15, he, alongside his elder son and actor Manchu Vishnu, visited the hospital to meet the journalist, once more apologizing to him and his family.
During the Supreme Court proceedings, Mohan Babu's lawyer informed the court that he had reached out to the injured journalist and pledged to provide the necessary financial support.
Meanwhile, the Telangana High Court postponed the hearing on Mohan Babu's petition to dismiss the FIR filed against him at Pahadi Shareef Police Station. His attorney notified the court of the Supreme Court's decision to grant anticipatory bail.
The High Court has adjourned the hearing to March 4, following the request from Mohan Babu's counsel.
