Mumbai, July 14 (NationPress) Actress Sheetal Maulik, currently portraying Priya in "Meri Bhavya Life", shared a troubling incident regarding the casting couch during her early career.
She admitted to being quite naïve at that stage, unaware of such practices or the prevailing culture.
Reflecting on the incident that influenced her path, Sheetal remarked, “It was a complete surprise to me. I was very innocent when I embarked on my acting career. I was merely 15 or 16 years old. At that time, we were still seen as kids, with our parents making most decisions. The current generation is far more aware and knowledgeable.”
“I was in discussions for a role when I was directly asked if I was prepared to compromise. My innocence led me to agree immediately, thinking it meant they would simply offer me a lower salary. I returned home ecstatic, informing my family, ‘Yay! I’m selected! They’ll just pay me less, and I accepted it,’” she recalled.
Sheetal expressed her shock upon realizing the true nature of the situation. “The following day, the producer called me for a night meeting. I was surprised, asking, ‘Sir, now?’ He replied, ‘Yes, we discussed compromising, and you seemed comfortable.’ I reiterated, ‘Yes, I’m fine with less money,’ to which he responded, ‘No, we can offer you more. All you need to do is…’ I ended the call right there. That moment was truly shocking for me,” she added.
Despite feeling unsettled by the experience, Sheetal chose to concentrate on the positive aspects of the industry. She stated, “Yes, there’s a dark side to the industry, but there are also many good people—professionals who value and admire your talents. I was fortunate to encounter such individuals and did not allow that one experience to deter me. I continued my journey.”
She mentioned that after the incident, her mother began accompanying her to auditions, and she herself became more vigilant.
"I consistently advise newcomers—trust your talent and remain committed to your path. Hard work and integrity will lead you far,” Sheetal concluded.
