Bihar Police Officer Receives Cardboard Treatment After Accident, Inquiry Launched
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, April 9 (NationPress) A troubling event from Sheohar district in Bihar has raised significant alarms regarding the state of public healthcare. A police officer, injured in a road traffic collision, was reportedly given makeshift treatment using cardboard pieces and saline tubes at a government medical facility.
Police Sub-Inspector Shyamlal endured serious injuries from a road accident that occurred near Fatehpur on Madhuban Road on Wednesday.
As recounted by the officer, a reckless four-wheeler lost control and crashed into his vehicle. He suffered multiple fractures in his leg and was promptly rescued by fellow police officers and taken to Sadar Hospital for medical attention.
“The incident was triggered by a speeding vehicle that veered off course and collided head-on with my vehicle near Fatehpur,” Shyamlal stated.
Upon arrival at the hospital, instead of receiving a plaster cast, medical staff allegedly stabilized his fractured leg using cardboard pieces and saline tubes—an approach that shocked onlookers and incited public outrage.
The presence of senior police officials, including SHO Randhir Kumar Singh, brought additional scrutiny to the hospital’s inadequate resources.
Community members expressed grave concerns about the public healthcare system, questioning what treatment ordinary citizens might encounter if even a police officer was subjected to such conditions.
Addressing the backlash, Civil Surgeon Deepak Kumar clarified that the officer's leg had multiple fractures, making immediate plastering unfeasible without surgical intervention. “We provided temporary support using accessible materials after proper bandaging. The patient has been referred for advanced treatment,” he explained.
The injured officer has since been referred to Sitamarhi for further medical attention.
District Magistrate Pratibha Rani noted that she has acknowledged the incident and has initiated an inquiry. “Cardboard was utilized to support the fractured leg after bandaging. We are collecting comprehensive details and will take measures to enhance the system,” she remarked.
This incident has once again highlighted the deficiencies in Bihar's public healthcare system, raising urgent concerns about the standards of emergency care and the availability of essential medical supplies.
