US and Iran Engage in High-Stakes Talks Amid Trump's Claims of Victory
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, April 12 (NationPress) The United States is currently holding intensive, in-person trilateral discussions with both Pakistan and Iran in Islamabad, despite President Donald Trump's claim that America has already achieved a significant strategic win, irrespective of the final results.
The Islamabad meeting has reportedly been ongoing for "15 hours and counting!" as per a senior official from the White House, last updated several hours ago.
This meeting involves a primary U.S. delegation spearheaded by Vice President JD Vance and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside Jared Kushner and a wider array of national security and regional specialists.
The extended team includes Dr. Andrew Baker, who serves as the Deputy National Security Advisor to the President and the National Security Advisor to the Vice President, along with Michael Vance, who is the Special Advisor to the Vice President for Asian Affairs. Additional experts from Washington are also contributing to this effort.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump provided a forthright evaluation of the negotiations and the overall strategic situation.
"Regardless of the outcome, we emerge victorious. We have decisively overcome that nation. Let’s see what unfolds; perhaps they will strike a deal, or perhaps they won't. From America's perspective, we are victorious," he stated.
The President connected the negotiations to broader economic and energy trends, highlighting a surge in tanker operations.
"One of the developments is that vessels are arriving and departing to our country, large, impressive tankers that we're filling with oil, gas, and more. It's a wonderful sight to behold," he remarked.
Trump further framed the discussions as part of a larger strategic strategy encompassing both military and diplomatic dimensions.
"We are deeply engaged in negotiations with Iran, and we win no matter what. We have defeated them on the battlefield," he asserted.
The President claimed significant degradation of Iran's military capacity, alleging that its naval and aerial capabilities have been neutralized.
"We have vanquished their navy, their air force, and their anti-aircraft systems. Their radar has been dismantled," Trump added, noting that "their leaders have all perished."
Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing initiatives to secure maritime routes, with U.S. forces actively working to mitigate potential threats.
"We have mine sweepers deployed out there... clearing the straits," he stated.
Despite the strong language, Trump suggested that achieving a negotiated settlement remains uncertain and is not critical from Washington's viewpoint.
"Whether we finalize a deal or not holds no significance for me," he concluded.
