India Surpasses All Nations to Become Sri Lanka’s Top Tourist Source: Insights from Recent Report
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Colombo, Feb 23 (NationPress) The influx of Indian tourists to Sri Lanka has seen a significant rise over the last three years, solidifying India's status as the foremost source of international visitors.
In 2022, Indian tourists represented 17 percent of total arrivals, and by 2025, this figure surged to 22.5 percent, highlighting India's undeniable lead over other nations, according to a recent report.
As reported by the prominent international news outlet 'The Diplomat', the United Kingdom stands as the second-largest source market for Sri Lanka, contributing 9.5 percent of arrivals in 2025, with 224,643 visitors. Indian arrivals have now surpassed those of the next closest country by a margin greater than twofold.
“Tourism has played an essential role in Sri Lanka’s economic resurgence following the 2022 economic downturn. It is now one of the quickest sectors to rebound, contributing significantly to foreign income. In 2022, total arrivals plummeted to 719,978, generating $1.1 billion or 5.2 percent of foreign exchange earnings. By 2025, arrivals rebounded to 2.3 million as travel confidence improved, with tourism revenue rising to $3.2 billion. This recovery has stabilized foreign reserves, supported employment, and revitalized sectors linked to travel, such as aviation and hospitality,” the report elaborated.
“Indian tourists have been pivotal in this growth, quietly transforming the tourism landscape of Sri Lanka. From bolstering the national airline to enhancing air connectivity, this market is a driving force behind the island’s economic recovery. They have also established Sri Lanka as a premier honeymoon destination and are setting fresh trends in the sector,” it continued.
The report noted that India emerged as the principal source market for Sri Lankan Airlines in 2025, with 200,141 travelers, accounting for approximately 37.6 percent of tourist arrivals, confirming a clear trend. While long-haul destinations remain important, it stated that Indian travelers offer “volume, frequency, and relative stability” for the national carrier.
“Sri Lanka’s air connectivity has also transformed through the rapid growth of Indian low-cost carriers, particularly IndiGo. In 2022, this airline represented only 4.9 percent of inbound traffic to Sri Lanka. As the demand from Indian tourists surged, IndiGo expanded its routes and flight frequencies, increasing its market share to 6.6 percent in 2023 and 8.5 percent in 2024,” the report noted.
“By 2025, IndiGo captured 12 percent of the total inbound tourist air traffic and is now among the fastest-growing airlines serving the island. Its budget-friendly model and direct flights from various Indian cities have made travel to Sri Lanka more affordable. High-frequency short-haul services have also broadened access, particularly for first-time and cost-conscious travelers,” it added.
Despite the impact of Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025, the report indicated that “over 56,000 Indian tourists visited the country,” making up nearly 45 percent of all arrivals in December last year.
