Tel Aviv, Jan 31 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to Israel in February should not merely be viewed as a ceremonial bilateral interaction; instead, it serves as a strategic indication. This visit underscores India’s ambition to carry forward its European engagement into West Asia, linking security, trade, and technology across these regions rather than considering them as distinct spheres, a report revealed on Saturday.

According to Sergio Restelli, an Italian political advisor, author, and geopolitical analyst, “The European Union and India accomplished something quietly significant in late January. In addition to the long-awaited EU–India Free Trade Agreement, they established their inaugural Security and Defence Partnership. This is not just bureaucratic housekeeping; it is a strategic declaration: Europe and India now perceive trade, security, technology, and geopolitics as interconnected domains.”

Restelli emphasized the importance of this perspective from Jerusalem. He stated that Prime Minister Modi’s forthcoming visit to Israel transcends mere bilateral relations; it is indicative of how India is positioning itself as a pivotal connector between Europe and West Asia during a period of significant strategic transformation.

Over the years, EU–India relations have often been described as “underperforming,” a diplomatic euphemism for untapped potential. Restelli asserted that linking the Free Trade Agreement with a defence and security accord significantly changes the narrative, intertwining trade and security in a deliberate manner.

The defence partnership encompasses maritime security, cyber threats, counterterrorism, the safeguarding of critical infrastructure, space, and defence industry collaboration. This comprehensive scope reveals that Brussels and New Delhi recognize that today’s prosperity hinges on stability across maritime routes, digital networks, and supply chains—elements that cannot be protected solely through economic agreements.

“This is crucial for Israel as it reshapes the strategic landscape in which India operates. India is evolving from being merely a vast market or a balancing force in Asia; it is emerging as a foundational element in a broader framework connecting Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and West Asia,” he noted.

The report concluded that even in isolation, PM Modi’s visit to Israel is significant, as under his leadership, India–Israel relations have progressed from discreet cooperation to a transparent strategic partnership, particularly in defence, technology, agriculture, and innovation.

From Brussels to Jerusalem, the message remains clear: India is no longer merely balancing between power poles; it is actively shaping the connective framework between them. For Israel, this is an opportunity that warrants close observation.
