Iran Calls US Naval Blockade 'Maritime Piracy', Vows to Protect Strait of Hormuz
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tehran, April 13 (NationPress) Iran has vocally criticized the United States for its recent decision to impose restrictions on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian government labeled President Donald Trump's naval blockade, effective from Monday evening, as an unlawful act and an example of "maritime piracy".
A representative from the Iranian military’s Central Command emphasized that protecting the nation’s legitimate rights is regarded as a natural and legal obligation.
Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for the Central Headquarters 'Khatam al-Anbia', stated, "As a result, the Iranian Armed Forces will unwaveringly continue to secure the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic. As previously mentioned, vessels associated with the enemy are prohibited from crossing the Strait of Hormuz, while other ships, adhering to the regulations set by the Iranian Armed Forces, will be granted passage through the strait."
He further indicated that due to ongoing threats to Iranian national security and the well-being of its citizens, the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to implementing a robust mechanism for controlling the Strait of Hormuz.
The military representative cautioned that if there is any threat to Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, "no port in these regions will remain safe", as reported by Tasnim.
On the previous day, the United States announced its intention to enforce a broad maritime blockade on all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports starting April 13. This escalation of tensions followed unsuccessful high-stakes discussions between Washington and Tehran, which aimed to address critical issues, including Iran's nuclear program.
The announcement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that this blockade would target “all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports”, including those in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
According to CENTCOM, “The blockade will be enforced without bias against vessels of all nations,” and US forces will not obstruct ships navigating through the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports. The blockade is set to commence at 7:30 PM IST on Monday, according to a CENTCOM statement.
