Yangon, Oct 8 (NationPress) Authorities in Myanmar have made a significant bust, confiscating 3,438 kg of ICE (methamphetamine) and 2,198 kg of ketamine in the Yangon region, as reported by local media on Wednesday.
The drugs were seized along with the arrest of 16 suspects linked to the operation that occurred between September 24 and 29 across several townships including Shwepyitha, Hlegu, Thongwa, Hlaingtharyar, Twante, and Htantabin. Reports from Xinhua cite state-owned daily Myanma Alinn.
Additionally, three suspects are still at large.
These drugs originated from Shan state and were destined for trafficking to Rakhine state and Malaysia via Yangon.
The arrested individuals face charges as per the nation’s laws, and investigations continue.
In a related incident, police also seized 207 kg of ICE in Shan, as reported by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Wednesday.
Following a tip-off, anti-narcotics police conducted a raid in Tachileik township on Oct. 4, confiscating drugs and four vehicles. Seven suspects were apprehended, while the owner of the drugs remains unidentified.
Charges have been filed under Myanmar's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, and investigations are ongoing.
Earlier, on September 16, police in Yangon seized 997 kg of ICE while patrolling the Yangon River. Narcotics were confiscated from a motorboat in Botahtaung township, leading to the arrest of two suspects onboard. Four more suspects were arrested on September 16 and 17 in various townships.
Investigations revealed that these narcotics were meant for transport to the estuary.
