Yangon, Aug 13 (NationPress) Myanmar's authorities have confiscated more than 66.6 tonnes of illegal timber during a comprehensive three-day crackdown, as reported by state media on Wednesday.
From August 8 to August 10, the confiscated timber comprised over 22.07 tonnes of teak, over 9.46 tonnes of hardwood, and over 35.14 tonnes of various other timber types found in different regions, states, and the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, according to reports from the state-run daily Myanma Alinn and Xinhua news agency.
During this operation, 29 individuals were arrested, and six vehicles and machinery used in the illegal activities were also seized.
The Forest Department, part of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, is intensifying its efforts to combat the illegal timber trade through various enforcement strategies, including the Community Monitoring and Reporting System, in partnership with local communities.
Earlier in July, authorities confiscated two million stimulant tablets in Shan State, as reported by the state-owned daily The Mirror.
On July 20, acting on a tip-off, anti-narcotics police conducted a search of a vehicle in Mong Hsat Township of Shan State, leading to the seizure of the drugs and the arrest of two suspects.
The street value of the confiscated narcotics was estimated at 800 million kyats (approximately $0.38 million).
Charges have been filed against the suspects under relevant laws.
In a related incident on July 23, authorities seized 67.33 kg of heroin in the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, as stated by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC).
Anti-narcotics police followed up on a tip-off to search two vehicles in Lewe Township, leading to the confiscation of the drugs and the arrest of two suspects, with another suspect apprehended in Tachileik Township of Shan State.
On July 22, authorities also seized 1,875 kg of methamphetamine, known as Ice, along with 1.6 million stimulant tablets in the Yangon region, as reported by the CCDAC.
Anti-narcotics police raided a residence in Insein Township and confiscated the illicit substances, leading to the arrest of nine suspects across Yangon, Bago, and Mandalay regions.
Investigations revealed that the narcotics were intended for distribution in Malaysian waters.
