Phnom Penh, March 23 (NationPress) Sokimex, a prominent importer of petroleum and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Cambodia, has declared a temporary halt in its LPG supply starting April due to significant disruptions in transportation linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In an official statement issued to the press on Sunday, the company detailed that the persistent unrest and instability in the Middle East have severely impacted the global transportation of petroleum and LPG, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

According to Sokimex's Vice Chairman, Diep Cheng Heng, this situation has also adversely affected Cambodia, stating, "Given these challenging circumstances, Sokimex has not been able to import LPG since early March 2026 and consequently cannot meet the LPG supply for customers as per the market demands."

"As a result, Sokimex hereby announces the temporary suspension of LPG supply effective April 1, 2026, until further notice," added Cheng Heng.

He also mentioned that the company will actively monitor the situation and provide timely updates while collaborating closely with customers to navigate these challenges.

As of Sunday, the price of LPG was reported at 3,200 riels (approximately 0.8 US dollars), which marks a 60% increase from 2,000 riels (0.5 US dollars) prior to the onset of the Middle East conflict, according to the company.

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet stated on social media on Saturday that in an effort to alleviate the burden on consumers, the government has subsidized 6.5 US cents per litre for gasoline and diesel, with an additional subsidy of 1 US cent per litre if international fuel prices exceed 90 dollars per barrel for gasoline and 100 dollars per barrel for diesel.

Furthermore, the government has eliminated import duties and value-added tax (VAT) on gasoline and diesel, with the special excise tax on gasoline being reduced to 15.71 US cents per litre and set to zero for diesel.

Point of View

Sokimex's decision to suspend LPG supplies highlights the interconnectedness of global markets and the significant impact on local economies. This move is a crucial step in addressing immediate supply chain challenges while the government seeks to alleviate consumer burdens through subsidies.
