Georgetown, May 27 (NationPress) Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, heading a delegation to Guyana as part of India's global outreach initiative known as Operation Sindoor in the campaign against Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism, highlighted the allegations made by The Resistance Front (TRF) and the presence of uniformed personnel from the Pakistani military and police at a terrorist's funeral.
In a post on X, Tharoor conveyed that when questioned about Pakistan's involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack, he remarked: "I referenced the assertions of The Resistance Front, a recognized support group for Lashkar-e-Toiba, and the presence of dressed Pakistani military and police members at a terrorist's funeral - complete with photographic evidence!"
Following this, a significant and constructive discussion took place regarding recent events.
"Every MP reiterated their stance on the terrorism faced by India and our determination to protect ourselves. We all signed the visitor's book before sharing lunch with the Speaker," the leader noted.
The delegation paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a local park.
"The delegation conducted pushparchana at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi situated in a prominent park in Georgetown. It was appropriate to honor the symbol of peace — a reminder that India aspires to focus on the welfare of its citizens while being subjected to terror and conflict by our neighboring country. I engaged with members of the Indian community who warmly welcomed us," his post elaborated.
"The MPs also honored the memorial statue of the SS Whitby, the first vessel that brought indentured Indian laborers to Guyana in 1838. The brutal practice of indentured servitude persisted with new arrivals until 1917. The mortality rate on these voyages was more devastating than that of slave ships. Yet, those who survived and their descendants have contributed to building a nation and a vibrant multicultural society. Respect to them," his post stated.
On Monday, the delegation met with Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who hosted a dinner celebrating the friendship and shared aspirations of the two nations.
Tharoor, alongside the all-party delegation, participated in the 59th Independence Day celebrations of Guyana in Berbice, extending best wishes to the citizens of the South American country.
"We attended the 59th Independence Day celebrations of Guyana last night in Berbice. It was a delightful event held in an open field with enthusiastic public engagement, cultural performances, a midnight flag-hoisting, and fireworks. The Indian MPs felt honored to be publicly recognized. (Last pic) President Irfan Ali greeted us after his address, during which he announced that general elections would occur on September 1," he shared.
Tharoor also posted several snapshots from the various events.
In a post on the social media platform X on Tuesday, BJP MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, who is also part of the delegation, expressed: "We had the privilege of meeting H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of #Guyana, during the Indian Parliamentary Delegation's visit. The evening concluded with a gracious dinner hosted in honor of the delegation - celebrating friendship and common aspirations. @PMOIndia"
The delegation led by Tharoor includes Shambhavi Choudhary from the Lok Janshakti Party, Sarfaraz Ahmad from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Milind Murli Deora from the Shiv Sena, along with Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Tejasvi Surya from the Bharatiya Janata Party, GM Harish Balayogi from the Telugu Desam Party, a National Democratic Alliance partner, and former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
