Eight migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh were killed and several others injured after a pickup truck collided with a dumper truck in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh in the early hours of Tuesday, 18 August. The fatal crash occurred around 1:00 am near Chhimaka village in the Gohad area, as the labourers were returning home after completing paddy transplantation work in the Gwalior region.

How the Accident Happened

According to officials, the speeding pickup truck lost control while attempting to swerve around a herd of cows on the highway, veering into the path of an oncoming dumper truck. The collision was severe enough to badly mangle the pickup. All those aboard were residents of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh, who had travelled to the Gwalior belt for seasonal agricultural work.

The Gohad Chauraha police station team reached the scene promptly after receiving information about the crash. With assistance from local villagers, police extricated those trapped in the wreckage and rushed the injured to Gohad Hospital, where doctors declared eight labourers dead. The critically injured were subsequently referred to Gwalior for advanced medical care.

Identification and Repatriation Efforts

The bodies of the deceased have been placed in the mortuary, and police are working to identify the victims and notify their families. The district administration has initiated the process of transporting the mortal remains to Lakhimpur Kheri. Officials have been directed to coordinate with the Madhya Pradesh government to facilitate the repatriation and ensure adequate medical support for the surviving injured.

CM Yogi Announces ₹2 Lakh Ex-Gratia

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced a financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for each of the bereaved families. Posting on X, he described the loss of life as 'extremely painful and heart-wrenching' and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

Chief Minister Adityanath also directed state officials to liaise with their counterparts in Madhya Pradesh to ensure the smooth return of the mortal remains and proper treatment for the injured.

A Recurring Tragedy for Migrant Workers

This incident underscores the persistent vulnerability of migrant agricultural labourers travelling in overcrowded or ill-equipped vehicles on national highways. Seasonal workers from districts such as Lakhimpur Kheri regularly travel hundreds of kilometres for paddy transplantation and harvest work, often in conditions that offer little protection in the event of a road accident. Notably, highway cattle hazards — a known and recurring trigger of fatal crashes — remain inadequately addressed across several stretches of Madhya Pradesh's road network.

Authorities are expected to file a formal accident report, and the police have registered a case. The focus now shifts to ensuring the families of the deceased receive both the announced financial assistance and the timely return of their loved ones.
