Berhampur, Odisha, April 23: In a significant law enforcement breakthrough, Berhampur Police have arrested nine accused individuals, including the alleged mastermind, in connection with the brutal kidnapping and murder of businessman Sudhir Kumar Patra in Gopalpur, Ganjam district. The arrest came after a week-long investigation that uncovered a chilling family feud rooted in inheritance disputes and allegations of sorcery.

How the Case Came to Light

The case was registered on April 16 when the victim's wife filed a complaint at Gopalpur Police Station, stating that her 47-year-old husband, Sudhir Kumar Patra, had been abducted on the evening of April 15 by unidentified assailants. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore and threatened to kill him if their demands were not met.

Police launched an immediate investigation, and early clues pointed toward the involvement of individuals close to the victim's own family — a development that significantly narrowed the suspect pool within days.

Family Feud and the Motive Behind the Murder

Ganjam Superintendent of Police, Suvendu Kumar Patra, confirmed that interrogation revealed the prime accused to be Nibedita Patra, the victim's own niece. "Following the death of the victim's brother, a prominent businessman, disputes arose between the two families over the distribution of money and other financial matters," the SP told reporters.

The deceased brother, Manoj Kumar Patra, had passed away on June 9, 2025. Sudhir and Manoj had jointly operated a real estate business in the region. After Manoj's death, the families allegedly fell into a bitter conflict over assets and financial settlements.

Nibedita reportedly believed her family had been treated unfairly in the division of wealth. More disturbingly, she allegedly suspected that Sudhir had practiced sorcery — a belief she held responsible for her father's untimely death. This toxic combination of financial grievance and superstition is believed to have driven her to orchestrate the kidnapping.

How the Kidnapping and Murder Were Executed

Investigators revealed that Nibedita Patra, along with her brother Tushar Kumar Patro and associate Kalu Charan Pradhan, devised the kidnapping plan. Kalu then reached out to criminal networks, including individuals linked to Surat, Gujarat, to carry out the operation.

On the evening of April 15, Sudhir Kumar Patra was abducted while returning home after a volleyball game. He was first transported in a Bolero vehicle and later shifted to another car near Polasara. The accused then took him deep into Ramapada jungle, under Buguda Police limits.

Inside the jungle, the accused allegedly assaulted Sudhir with wooden planks and fired shots near him to terrorise him. The assault was video-recorded and sent to his wife as proof, along with the Rs 2 crore ransom demand. Sudhir subsequently succumbed to his injuries, and his body was later dumped near Ketamani Hills under Sorada Police limits.

All Nine Accused Arrested, Weapons and Phones Seized

Acting swiftly, Berhampur Police arrested all nine accused persons: Nibedita Patra, Tushar Kumar Patro, Kalu Charan Pradhan, Jitun Polai, Narayan Pradhan, Ashis Mahapatra, Subham Nayak, Subham Gouda, and Surya Pratap Singh.

Investigators also seized critical evidence, including two vehicles, 14 mobile phones, and a country-made firearm. The cross-state criminal network — stretching from Ganjam, Odisha to Surat, Gujarat — underscores the organised nature of the crime.

Broader Implications: Superstition, Family Crime, and Cross-State Networks

This case highlights a disturbing pattern in rural Odisha where superstition-driven violence intersects with financial disputes to produce extreme criminal outcomes. Odisha has recorded multiple cases of violence rooted in witchcraft accusations, and this incident — where suspicion of sorcery allegedly fuelled a murder conspiracy — adds to that troubling trend.

The involvement of criminals from Gujarat to execute a murder-for-hire in Odisha also signals the growing reach of inter-state criminal networks that exploit local grievances. Law enforcement agencies may need to coordinate across state lines more effectively to dismantle such networks before they strike.

As the case moves to court, all eyes will be on whether the accused face charges under kidnapping, extortion, and murder provisions of the Indian Penal Code, and whether the Gujarat connection leads to further arrests. The Ganjam Police have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and more revelations are expected in the coming days.
