Chandigarh, Jan 29 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government on Wednesday for failing to deliver on its widely publicized pledge to grant Rs 1,000 monthly to women aged 18 and above.
He stated, "Now, the party is making promises of Rs 2,100 monthly for women in Delhi."
A prominent newspaper in India cited a senior Punjab government official, indicating that the government has been gathering data on income tax filers and other female voters. Should the scheme be rolled out, it is likely to apply only to women who do not pay income tax. The official further expressed skepticism about the feasibility of the initiative, suggesting that income tax payers would be excluded.
In his remarks, Bajwa highlighted that the AAP government may impose additional restrictions alongside the income tax criteria.
The original commitment was to provide Rs 1,000 per month to all women over 18. However, now that three years have passed since taking office, the AAP government appears ready to limit the scheme to non-income-tax-paying women.
The Bhagwant Mann government is clearly "reneging" on its promises, and this serves as further evidence that the AAP made grandiose commitments during the 2022 Assembly elections to secure votes, he asserted.
Simultaneously, Bajwa pointed out that the AAP has made a similarly "hollow" promise in Delhi.
"AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is now pledging Rs 2,100 monthly for women in Delhi. Voters in Delhi should learn from Punjab's experience and consider voting AAP out in the forthcoming Assembly elections," Bajwa urged.
Earlier this month, a group of women from Punjab staged a protest outside Kejriwal's residence in Delhi, claiming the party had failed to fulfill its promise of providing Rs 1,000 monthly financial support to women in the state.
The state Congress president, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who participated in the protest, stated, "Kejriwal vowed Rs 1,000 for the women of Punjab, yet they have seen nothing to date. Now, he is offering Rs 2,100 to women in Delhi."
"We want to make it clear to the women in Delhi through this protest that these are merely empty promises that will never be honored," Warring concluded.
