Kolkata, August 10 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent BJP figure, has announced plans to host a convention near the residence of the parents of the RG Kar rape and murder victim. The aim is to raise awareness about the alleged isolation faced by the elderly couple.
This initiative comes in light of reports that the victim's parents have been marginalized by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
LoP Adhikari accused the TMC of isolating the couple due to their ongoing quest for justice for their late daughter, and has called for a Nabanna Avijan (March to the State Secretariat) to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic event.
“We have learned that the ruling party is treating the victim's parents this way. I am in contact with the family. Despite our limited resources, we are considering organizing a convention against the injustice inflicted by the TMC,” said Adhikari.
Alongside other BJP legislators, LoP Adhikari intends to conduct these conventions to express solidarity with the victim's parents during these challenging times.
A BJP source revealed that the conventions will span two days.
“Through this event, LoP Adhikari seeks to connect with every household in the area where the victim's parents reside. Preparations are underway to hold the event promptly. As part of the initiative, BJP MLAs will conduct door-to-door campaigns and meetings to highlight the ruling party's treatment of the victim's family,” the insider added.
BJP MLAs will also visit local markets to engage with a larger audience.
Additionally, pamphlets detailing the RG Kar Hospital incident and the TMC's involvement will be distributed in the neighborhood.
In response, the TMC criticized LoP Adhikari's plan for the convention. TMC MLA and Chief Whip, Nirmal Ghosh, stated, “Our party empathizes with the parents of the deceased doctor. It is untrue that we have isolated them. They sometimes turn to the BJP, the CPM, and even the Maoists. I will refrain from commenting further as they have suffered a loss. However, I believe there is no need for a convention since the area remains peaceful.”
The mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim was discharged from a private hospital on Sunday afternoon, where she was treated following injuries sustained during Saturday's Nabanna Avijan.
She had to be hospitalized after becoming unwell amid police actions against the demonstrators.
The victim's mother claimed that she was assaulted by police officers when she and other protesters tried to march towards Nabanna (State Secretariat).
During the incident, she and BJP leaders alleged that the sacred conch shell-bangle on her wrist, which symbolizes married Hindu women, was broken.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma stated that authorities are reviewing CCTV and video footage to determine whether the victim's mother was indeed assaulted.
