Chandigarh, Dec 8 (NationPress) On Monday, Alba Smeriglio officially assumed her role as the British Deputy High Commissioner in Chandigarh.
She will serve as the representative of the UK across four states: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, along with the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
Alba is an accomplished diplomat with extensive experience in both international and domestic roles. Her prior assignments include a position in Montserrat as the Head of Programmes and Office, alongside various roles in the Caribbean and South Asia.
In her time in London, she focused on numerous policy areas such as economic growth, democratic governance, security cooperation, and human rights.
She holds a BSc in International Development from the London School of Economics, an MA from the University of Aberdeen, and a postgraduate degree in Politics from the University of Siena.
Alba succeeds Caroline Rowett, who served in this role since February 2021.
During Caroline's farewell in July, she emphasized the UK's investments in the region, noting an agro-industry project in Kullu and the establishment of an Indian operation by a Scottish distillery, which highlights the growing economic ties between the UK and Himachal Pradesh.
Caroline had also visited Kullu-Manali in June, where she interacted with stakeholders from the tourism and hospitality sectors, including hoteliers and tour operators, to explore potential collaborations.
During this visit, the UK delegation connected with artisans creating traditional Himachali handloom products.
Upon the signing of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a pivotal move towards enhancing bilateral economic relations, Caroline stated to IANS that the deal could boost bilateral trade, valued at 43 billion pounds in 2024, by an additional 25.5 billion pounds, while increasing UK GDP by 4.8 billion pounds and annual wages by 2.2 billion pounds.
The investment relationship between the UK and India currently supports over 600,000 jobs across both nations.
As of 2024, there are more than 950 Indian-owned companies operating in the UK and over 650 UK companies in India.
