General Dhiraj Seth, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), on Friday, 31 July launched the indigenously developed 'Xtreme Weather Grade' (XWG) diesel in New Delhi, marking a significant step in enhancing the operational mobility of military vehicles in extreme climatic conditions. The specialised fuel was developed jointly by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies within a year, according to an official statement.

What XWG Diesel Is and Why It Was Needed

Conventional diesel thickens and clogs fuel filters at very low temperatures, severely hampering vehicle operations in high-altitude and snow-bound terrain. XWG Diesel overcomes this limitation by remaining fully effective at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius.

The fuel is compliant with BS-VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications, and can be deployed across the Indian Army's existing vehicle fleet without any engine modification or re-homologation — a critical advantage given the scale of the fleet.

What the Army Chief Said

Speaking at the launch, General Seth described XWG Diesel as a 'game-changing indigenous innovation' that would enhance mobility, operational readiness, and mission reliability across extreme climatic conditions. He noted that the fuel would eliminate practices previously required to keep vehicles functional during severe winters, thereby improving both the safety and morale of personnel deployed in such regions.

The COAS commended the Indian Army team and the Oil Marketing Companies for delivering the solution within a year, and expressed confidence that the collaboration would yield further specialised fuels tailored to diverse operational requirements.

Wider Significance: Atmanirbhar Bharat and Civilian Use

Beyond its military applications, the technology carries significant civilian potential. According to the official statement, XWG Diesel will also benefit users in high-altitude and extreme winter regions — improving reliability and safety of vehicles and equipment operating under severe climatic conditions. Officials described the development as a meaningful step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, the government's self-reliance initiative.

Notably, the fuel was developed entirely within India, reflecting a broader push to reduce the armed forces' dependence on imported or foreign-designed specialised equipment.

Eastern Theatre Visit and Flood Relief Update

Earlier in the week, General Seth had concluded a two-day visit to formations under the Eastern Theatre, during which he reviewed the prevailing security situation, vigilance, and operational preparedness. He also assessed ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development across the region.

During the visit, the Army Chief received an update on ongoing flood relief operations being conducted by the Indian Army in the region, officials said.

With XWG Diesel now formally launched, the Indian Army is expected to begin phased induction of the fuel into high-altitude formations, with the technology's civilian rollout likely to follow in coordination with Oil Marketing Companies.
