Key Takeaways
Itanagar, April 16 (NationPress) Arunachal Pradesh has officially commenced its preliminary activities for the Census of India 2027, becoming yet another northeastern state to do so, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein were both actively involved in this initiative, engaging in the process from Itanagar and Namsai, respectively.
In a statement shared on social media, the Chief Minister remarked: “I participated in the self-enumeration segment of the houselisting and housing census for Census 2027, marking my first-ever self-enumeration experience via geo-tagging and digital mapping.
This self-enumeration phase will be accessible from April 16 to April 30, 2026, allowing each household to engage digitally and provide precise information.
Following this, the houselisting and housing census field operations are slated to take place from May 1 to May 30, 2026, during which appointed enumerators will visit homes to gather data, Khandu noted.
“I encourage every household to actively engage during the self-enumeration phase and to fully cooperate with enumerators during their visits. Please ensure that your information is comprehensive and accurate,” the Chief Minister added.
Deputy Chief Minister Mein also shared his experience on his official X account, stating: “Today, as the self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 officially launches in Arunachal Pradesh, I completed my enumeration digitally at my residence in Namsai, utilizing geo-tagging and mapping for the first time.”
He characterized Census 2027 as an essential national undertaking that aids in development planning and improves public service delivery through reliable data.
The self-enumeration period will persist from April 16 to April 30, 2026, followed by enumerators conducting field visits from May 1 to May 30, 2026, Mein reiterated.
He urged all households to actively participate and assist census officials.
“Accurate information will greatly enhance our state's planning and foster inclusive growth,” he emphasized.
Mein also mentioned that he completed the process in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Namsai and Principal Census Officer C.R. Khampa, along with Joint Director of Census (DCO Shillong) Utpal Sarma and other census officials.
“Let us unite to fulfill this significant national duty,” he concluded.
In a related development, earlier in the day in Mizoram, Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) officially initiated the intensive houselisting and housing census operations for Census 2027 at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl.
The Governor urged census field workers to perform their responsibilities with utmost commitment and diligence, ensuring no household is overlooked.
He stressed the importance of clearly explaining the census process to individuals who may struggle to understand it, ensuring each person and household is accurately counted.
Labeling the initiative as India’s first-ever digital census, General Singh expressed confidence in its successful implementation and called upon the public to fully cooperate with census officials and enumerators.
