Mamata Banerjee Slams BJP's UCC Proposal in West Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 11 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress leader, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her disapproval of the BJP's proposal to enact a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal, asserting that this initiative aims to deprive citizens of their rights.
While speaking at an election rally in Keshiary, located in West Midnapore district, West Bengal's Chief Minister stated, "Are you aware of what UCC entails? You will lose your rights. Your ability to practice your faith freely will be compromised."
She elaborated, "Hindus, Scheduled Castes, tribals, minorities, and Christians each follow their unique marriage customs and rituals. Everyone has their own beliefs and traditions."
"However, the BJP insists on a singular approach. The BJP claims that you must adhere to their directives. This will strip away your religion, education, culture, and traditions," she warned.
Mamata Banerjee further questioned, "Do you truly understand what UCC means? There exists only one BJP, one policy, one religion. I urge you to reflect on this matter once more."
Her remarks followed the BJP's commitment to introduce UCC in West Bengal, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the party's 'Sankalp Patra (manifesto)' for the Assembly elections.
Additionally, Banerjee criticized the BJP and the Election Commission simultaneously, alleging a plot to invalidate her nomination in the Bhabanipur constituency.
She alleged, "Those traitors attempted to annul my nomination by submitting two fraudulent affidavits in my name. This was an effort to disqualify me at my polling station."
In her attack on the BJP and the Election Commission regarding this alleged conspiracy, she stated, "Despite their attempts to cancel my nomination, they ultimately failed. They have tarnished my reputation, making it difficult for me to contest in the elections."
The Trinamool leader added, "Our struggle is not solely against the BJP, but also against its 'washing machine.' If they are committing such injustices against me, consider what they might do to you."
Addressing the exclusion of names in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, she remarked, "SIR is a significant scam. It seeks to elevate the BJP to power. The BJP is bulldozing its way through."
She concluded, "The BJP is introducing the Delimitation Bill in Parliament during election time, as they are eager to fragment Bengal into smaller pieces," she asserted.
