Amit Shah: UCC Is a Constitutional Agenda, Not Just BJP's
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Durgapur, April 13 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed his unwavering belief in the electoral success of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal on Monday. He stated that the party is experiencing a "very positive atmosphere" throughout the state and is on track to establish the next government.
During an interview with IANS at a roadshow in Durgapur, Shah remarked that the public sentiment clearly reflects an increasing endorsement for the BJP.
"It is a very positive atmosphere for the Bharatiya Janata Party, and it is certain that a BJP government is going to be formed here," he affirmed.
Shah's comments come in the wake of a growing political rivalry between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has notably criticized the BJP's core ideological and policy positions, especially regarding the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
In her recent election rallies, Banerjee has characterized the UCC as a "very big attack", arguing that it jeopardizes the nation's diversity and social structure.
In response, Shah challenged the foundation of such criticisms, framing the matter as one of constitutional integrity rather than merely a political agenda.
"What kind of attack is it? Should the law in this country be determined by religion, or should there be a uniform law applicable to all religions?" Shah questioned.
He further stressed that the idea of a Uniform Civil Code is deeply embedded in the constitutional vision of equality.
"UCC is not merely the agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party; it represents the agenda of the Constitution of India," he asserted.
Regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which Banerjee labeled an "attack on democracy", Shah accused the Chief Minister of undermining democratic institutions.
"She (Mamata Banerjee) is attacking the Judiciary," he said, countering her allegations.
"The SIR is no longer under the Election Commission's purview; it is now supervised by the Supreme Court. Judicial officers are conducting it."
This exchange highlights the intensifying political contest in West Bengal, as parties prepare for upcoming elections.
With both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP ramping up their campaigning efforts, issues such as governance, constitutional principles, and the integrity of institutions are increasingly at the forefront in West Bengal.
Amit Shah's roadshow in Durgapur attracted large crowds, showcasing the BJP's determination to strengthen its presence in the state.
