Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) The government’s prominent initiative, 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (BBBP), has been evaluated by third parties on two occasions, once in 2020 and again in 2025, as confirmed by NITI Aayog. The assessments concluded that the scheme's effectiveness is satisfactory, as reported in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Savitri Thakur, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, responded to inquiries by stating, “The actions under BBBP have not only achieved remarkable recognition but have also evolved from a mere policy approach into a national movement. This transformation has engaged multiple stakeholders, including government bodies, media, civil society, and the wider public.”
The initiative aims to tackle immediate challenges associated with the Sex Ratio at Birth and gender-based discrimination while also fostering a cultural shift that honors the girl child and safeguards her rights and opportunities, she added.
“The Ministry's schemes, including those related to the BBBP, were evaluated by independent parties in 2020 and again in 2025 via NITI Aayog, which found the scheme's relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability to be satisfactory,” Thakur stated.
She emphasized that BBBP plays a crucial role in addressing the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) alongside empowering girls and women.
The scheme is designed to create a shift in mindset and behavior towards the girl child by informing, influencing, motivating, engaging, and empowering various stakeholders, she noted.
Revamped during the 15th Finance Commission Period from 2021-22 to 2025-26, the BBBP is now a key part of the Sambal Sub scheme under Mission Shakti.
“The BBBP has been extended to encompass all districts nationwide through multi-sectoral initiatives that promote increased investment in impactful activities,” she said.
The Minister of State affirmed that the government prioritizes the safety, security, and empowerment of girls across the country. “To achieve this, a multi-faceted strategy has been adopted to enhance the educational, social, and economic empowerment of girls,” she stated.
Thakur also pointed out that the government is advancing women-centric initiatives such as Namo Drone Didi, Lakhpati Didi, Women in Science and Engineering - KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN), and SERB-POWER (Promoting Opportunities for Women in Exploratory Research) to enhance women's employability.
