Calcutta HC Empowers CBI for New Interrogation of R.G. Kar Case Convict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 9 (NationPress) A division bench of the Calcutta High Court ruled on Thursday, granting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the authority to conduct further questioning of the sole convict in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy. This decision is part of the agency's ongoing investigation into the broader conspiracy surrounding this heinous act.
The bench, comprising Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay, noted the necessity for additional inquiry based on the belief that Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, possesses vital information. Consequently, CBI officials are permitted to interrogate him anew.
Furthermore, the bench emphasized that the CBI is authorized to question any other individuals linked to the case.
The court also urged the CBI to employ cutting-edge technology to uncover the truth behind the larger conspiracy associated with this crime. The victim, a trainee doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, tragically lost her life within the hospital premises in August 2024.
The family of the victim has already submitted DNA profiling reports and audio recordings of pertinent conversations to the court. The bench instructed the CBI to integrate these elements into their ongoing investigation and provide a comprehensive report to the court.
The next hearing is scheduled for May 12.
Additionally, the bench questioned the West Bengal government's objections to the victim's family visiting the crime scene, considering the CBI, as the investigative body, raised no concerns.
Since the state government is no longer a party to the case, the bench stated it should not interfere.
Moreover, the court recognized two petitions: one from the CBI seeking a death sentence for Roy, who is currently serving a life sentence, and another from Roy requesting honorable acquittal, which should be addressed concurrently.
