Calcutta High Court Requests Report from West Bengal Government Regarding 'Violence' in Cooperative Bank Elections

Kolkata, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court on Friday requested a report from the West Bengal government regarding claims of violence that occurred during the elections for a cooperative body in the East Midnapore district last month.

The single-judge bench, presided over by Justice Jay Sengupta, directed the state government to provide a report following a petition submitted by a local BJP leader who is seeking a National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into the incident.

The court mandated that the state government deliver the report by January 7, after which further hearings will be held.

In her petition, the local BJP leader, Mamoni Jana, claimed that on the evening of December 8, the date of the Tamluk Cooperative elections, two youths on motorcycles visited her home, lingered for a while, and then departed.

The following morning, a barrel filled with crude bombs was discovered near her residence. Jana contended that although the police were alerted, the staff at the local police station remained completely inactive and did not initiate any investigation.

After approximately four weeks of waiting for the local police to take action, she ultimately approached the Calcutta High Court to request an NIA investigation.

Her attorney argued in court that despite the recovery of explosives from the vicinity, the local police failed to apply the appropriate legal sections.

Justice Sengupta subsequently instructed the state government to submit the report in the form of an affidavit.

During the Tamluk Cooperative elections on December 8, the ruling Trinamool Congress achieved a majority by winning 56 out of 69 seats, while the BJP secured merely 13 seats.
