Srinagar, Jan 19 (NationPress) A civilian tragically lost his life in a fire incident at an army canteen located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar on Saturday, according to officials.

The flames erupted within the army canteen situated in the Badami Bagh Cantonment area of Srinagar.

"The deceased, a civilian from Haryana, was identified as Rajesh Kumar. He was taken to the army base hospital in Badami Bagh. Unfortunately, due to severe burn injuries, he succumbed in the hospital," an official reported.

"The canteen, operated by a civilian, caught fire during the night of January 18-19. In this unfortunate event, Rajesh Kumar suffered critical burns. The police have initiated an inquiry into the incident to determine the precise cause of the fire that resulted in the civilian's death," the officials added.

Earlier in the week, six soldiers sustained injuries on Tuesday in the Nowshera sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district when one soldier accidentally triggered a landmine while on patrol.

Areas near the LoC on the Indian side are often planted with landmines as part of an anti-infiltration strategy.

A senior army officer informed IANS that factors like rain can cause landmines, which are noted on the army’s patrolling maps, to shift from their designated locations.

"These misaligned mines are termed drift mines, and accidents involving landmines occur because these drift mines are not indicated on the patrolling maps," the officer explained.

In response to recent attacks orchestrated by terrorists under the direction of handlers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the army and security forces have ramped up anti-terror operations in J&K.
