Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) In a continuing political uproar, Congress leader Pawan Khera has leveled accusations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that his wife possesses foreign passports. This clash has drawn strong responses from Congress officials, who have criticized CM Sarma for his alleged “narrow-mindedness” and “corruption”.
CM Sarma and his family have vehemently refuted these claims.
Uttarakhand Congress President Ganesh Godiyal commented, "I believe that Himanta Biswa Sarma should understand that although his resignation is imminent, he currently occupies the Chief Minister’s position. His rhetoric does not reflect the demeanor of a humble leader."
Godiyal further stated, "It is Sarma's duty to clarify to the citizens of Assam and the nation how he intends to vindicate himself from these allegations."
He suggested that CM Sarma has found favor within the BJP due to his ideological alignment with the party.
During a press briefing, Congress Media In-charge, Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu, reiterated Khera’s claims, asserting that CM Sarma’s wife allegedly holds three passports: from UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt.
"All three passports are currently valid. I am uncertain whether she possesses an Indian passport," he remarked.
Balmuchu accused CM Sarma of engaging in divisive politics against Muslims, stating, "These countries are predominantly Muslim, yet they disparage Muslims by calling them 'Miyas', aiming to polarize the electorate."
He questioned the citizenship status of Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, asking, "If the Chief Minister claims to be a true nationalist, he should clarify whether his wife is an Indian citizen, and if she is, how can she hold three passports?"
Following these allegations, Assam Police visited Khera’s residence in Delhi after Riniki Bhuyan Sarma filed a police report regarding the matter.
In response, Congress MP Imran Masood stated, "This is indicative of their desperation. The documents presented serve as undeniable evidence that cannot simply be dismissed."
Meanwhile, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika highlighted CM Sarma’s popularity among female voters, noting, "Women in Assam extend their love and support to Himanta Biswa Sarma. Our gatherings see greater female participation, and thus our initiatives are largely aimed at women. Their endorsement is crucial for us."
The Assembly elections in Assam are set for April 9.
