Congress Suspends All Activities for a Week in Tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) The Congress has halted all its activities for a week as a tribute to the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday night at AIIMS.

In a statement on X, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal expressed: "In honor of the late former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji, all official engagements of the Indian National Congress, including the Foundation Day celebrations, will be suspended for the upcoming seven days.

"This encompasses all protest and outreach initiatives. Party activities will recommence on January 3, 2025. During this mourning period, the party flag will be displayed at half-mast.

Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday after being admitted to AIIMS in critical condition.

The demise was confirmed by AIIMS in a statement that read: "With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was receiving treatment for age-related health issues and experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. Emergency measures were initiated immediately, and he was transported to AIIMS. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m."

Dr. Singh, who held the office of Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was recognized for his pivotal role in guiding India’s economy through a significant liberalization phase.

He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. Funeral arrangements are anticipated to be revealed soon, with national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expected to honor his legacy. Dr. Singh's passing signifies the conclusion of an era in Indian politics. His leadership and legacy will continue to motivate future generations.

This past April, Dr. Manmohan Singh retired from Rajya Sabha, with Kharge commending his extensive parliamentary career.

Dr. Manmohan Singh rose to prominence as the Finance Minister in the administration of P.V. Narasimha Rao during 1991-1996, implementing sweeping reforms that reshaped the economy.

As the two-term Prime Minister of the UPA, he held the position from 2004 to 2014 and remained a member of Rajya Sabha until early this year.

Throughout his political journey, Dr. Singh has been a Rajya Sabha member since 1991, serving as Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 22 following the 2004 general elections and took the oath for a second term on May 22, 2009.

He represented Assam for five terms in the Upper House and transitioned to Rajasthan in 2019.

His final address in Parliament opposed demonetization, labeling it as "an organized loot and legalized plunder".
