Kolkata, Dec 26 (NationPress) A significant issue has arisen in West Bengal as the Election Commission of India (ECI) has called upon the mother, brother, and sister-in-law of a Trinamool Congress legislator to appear for a hearing regarding claims and objections on the draft voters’ list, even though all of them are included in the 2002 voters’ list, which was the last occasion the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was conducted in the state.
The legislator in question, Nabin Chandra Bag from the Khandaghosh Assembly constituency in the East Burdwan district, has alleged that the ECI's actions are a deliberate attempt to harass his family on the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“As a Trinamool Congress representative, the summoning of my mother, brother, and sister-in-law is an intentional act to intimidate me and my family. They are all listed in the 2002 voters’ list and this summons has caused my mother distress. I believe this is instigated by the BJP,” he stated.
However, the local BJP leadership in East Burdwan has dismissed these claims.
“The allegations from the Trinamool Congress legislator are misleading. Voters are often summoned due to discrepancies in name spellings. This might be the case here as well. The Trinamool Congress misled the public to gain power in West Bengal in 2011 and now they are attempting to mislead again due to the recent effort to remove illegal Bangladeshi voters from the list. His endeavors in this matter will not yield results,” said local BJP leader Mrityunjay Chandra.
Nabin Chandra Bag has been a legislator for three terms in Khandaghosh since 2011. Initially elected as a CPI(M) member from 2011 to 2016, he transitioned to the Trinamool Congress before the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections and has since won his seat twice as a ruling party candidate in 2016 and 2021.
The hearing regarding the draft voters’ list is set to commence on Saturday, with the final voters’ list scheduled for publication on February 14, 2026. Following this, the ECI will announce polling dates for the significant Assembly elections in the state.
