Vadodara, March 23 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, claimed on Monday that the rights of tribal groups are being systematically eroded, asserting that Adivasis are the true original owners of India.

He accused both the Gujarat and Central governments of seizing their lands and forests under the guise of development.

Addressing the Adivasi Adhikar Samvidhan Sammelan in Vadodara, Gandhi highlighted how tribal communities have been gradually dispossessed over the years.

"Adivasis have lost their land progressively. The responsibility lies with the nation. Your lands, forests, and everything that belongs to you have been taken by the government," he stated.

Linking the tribal identity to the principles of the Constitution, he remarked, "People vote for the Constitution, which is not just a document. Its ideology and values have been around for thousands of years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP members pay homage to tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda. This Constitution embodies his voice."

Rahul Gandhi contended that the present policies of the Central government contradict these foundational ideals.

"This government, both in Gujarat and at the Union level, consistently suppresses your voice and undermines Birsa Munda by taking away your rights, lands, and forests. Your land is appropriated for erecting statues or mining activities. It seems you possess no rights," he remarked.

Touching on economic policies, Gandhi criticized the limited benefits of privatization.

"While privatization has occurred, only five to seven percent of people enjoy its benefits. Industrialists have received their dues, but the impoverished remain empty-handed. Who truly benefits from this development?" he questioned.

In reference to the Union Budget presentation, Gandhi noted, "Last year, during the budget discussion, I pointed out the absence of any Dalit or Adivasi among the 11 to 12 individuals involved in creating the budget."

He mentioned that his call for a caste census had faced backlash.

"Whenever I bring up the caste census, the BJP and RSS criticize me," Gandhi stated.

Recalling welfare initiatives from previous Congress administrations, he mentioned, "We enacted the Forest Act, MGNREGA, and various other measures benefiting tribals and farmers."

He emphasized the importance of education, stating, "Without quality schools and educational institutions, neither the poor nor the tribal communities will prosper."

Gandhi also raised concerns regarding appointments in higher education.

"If you review the list of Vice-Chancellors at universities, you’ll find that only RSS affiliates are in those positions. Many lack knowledge of history and science. It is essential for you to take control of these institutions," he insisted.

He further alleged that there are efforts to diminish awareness among tribal populations.

"Those residing in forests are informed that they do not need education. They do not want you (tribals) to assert your rights," Gandhi said, adding that he might consider undertaking a yatra in tribal regions.
