Will the New HCL-Foxconn Plant Transform India's Chip Landscape?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that the launch of the HCL-Foxconn semiconductor facility in Uttar Pradesh signifies a pivotal advancement towards achieving technological self-sufficiency, which will greatly amplify India's foothold in the global chip ecosystem.
The Prime Minister officially inaugurated the HCL-Foxconn joint venture project, India Chip Private Limited, via video conferencing from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) location in Uttar Pradesh.
This new facility represents an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) operation, being developed with an investment exceeding Rs 3,700 crore.
During the event, PM Modi highlighted that Uttar Pradesh is swiftly becoming a significant center within India’s expanding semiconductor landscape.
“The nation is making steady progress towards independence in chip manufacturing, essential for industries such as electronics, automobiles, and digital technologies,” PM Modi remarked.
The OSAT facility is set to produce display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and various consumer electronics.
Once it becomes operational, the plant aims to process approximately 20,000 wafers each month. This initiative is expected to reduce India’s reliance on chip imports and bolster domestic supply chains.
Referring to this era as India’s “tech-ade,” the Prime Minister stated that investments in semiconductors are establishing the groundwork for the country’s technological leadership in the 21st century.
“Even though India entered the semiconductor race later than some countries, we have made significant strides,” PM Modi added.
As part of the India Semiconductor Mission, 10 such facilities have received approval thus far, with four nearing the start of production.
PM Modi also mentioned the recently held India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, where global leaders acknowledged India’s technological vision.
He noted that 2026 has commenced rapidly, calling this week historic for the nation’s technological evolution.
The new plant is anticipated to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, and skilled laborers.
“Furthermore, it is expected to foster ancillary industries, startups, and chip design hubs in the area. The facility’s location near Jewar Airport will enhance logistics and facilitate quicker global connectivity,” PM Modi emphasized.
