Himachal Pradesh Education Department Dismisses Three Professors Over Sexual Harassment Allegations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shimla, April 16 (NationPress) The Himachal Pradesh Education Department has terminated the services of three Assistant Professors following a departmental investigation that found them culpable of sexually harassing female students, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.
The individuals dismissed include Virender Sharma (Assistant Professor of Mathematics), Anil Kumar (Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Siddharth Government College, Hamirpur), and Pawan Kumar (Professor of Dance - Kathak at Jawaharlal Nehru Government College of Fine Arts, Shimla).
The decision, enacted on April 16 by Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar, indicated that the allegations of “serious moral misconduct and gross impropriety” were upheld. The order highlighted that the teacher-student dynamic relies on mutual trust, respect, and a secure academic setting. Such transgressions, it noted, compromise this essential foundation, disrupt institutional discipline, and diminish public confidence in the educational framework.
The department stated that the defenses put forth by the accused did not sufficiently challenge the evidence presented against them nor lessen the gravity of their misconduct as determined during the inquiry.
The investigation uncovered that Virender Sharma, stationed at Rajiv Gandhi Government Degree College, Chaura Maidan at the time, acted inappropriately towards a second-year B.Sc. student on December 1, 2021. He reportedly attempted to establish personal contact with the student by inviting her to his home, where he tried to assault her. The student resisted and managed to escape unharmed.
Anil Kumar, previously associated with Siddharth Government College, Nadaun, was found guilty of molesting and sexually harassing a first-year B.Sc. student during a Chemistry lab class on November 14, 2024. The inquiry revealed that he inappropriately touched the student multiple times and later fled to avoid the investigation.
In the third case, Pawan Kumar was discovered to have exploited his official role by summoning female students to his home late at night for dance rehearsals, pressuring some to stay overnight. On January 22, 2024, he allegedly attempted to sexually assault a female student and subsequently endeavored to conceal the incident. The investigation further uncovered that his spouse tried to intimidate the complainant's family.
Moreover, other accusations against him, including taking students to the Governor’s House without authorization, arbitrary grading practices, and failing to keep proper attendance records, were also validated.
Officials confirmed the immediate dismissal of all three educators.
