New Delhi, Nov 16 (NationPress) In the winding alleys of Dhule city, Maharashtra, an elderly woman named Santosh Choudhary has finally escaped the relentless anxiety of living in a kaccha house. The transformation in her life is due to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) which has enabled her to reside under a secure roof of her own.
For years, Latabai faced the challenge of paying rent with her meager income.
"Our financial situation was dire. We spent years in rented accommodations as we were unable to construct our own home," she shared with IANS.
Her fortunes began to shift when her application for PMAY was accepted.
"My application was chosen in 2016. Initially, I received Rs 60,000, then Rs 40,000, and eventually the complete funding. I am immensely thankful to PM Modi, as this scheme has granted me my own home," Latabai expressed.
With the financial aid provided by PMAY, she was able to build a compact yet durable house—something she had only dreamed of in the past.
Inside her new residence, she reflects on how the initiative has not only provided her with a physical structure but has also restored her dignity, stability, and a renewed sense of security.
Latabai is among countless women in Maharashtra who have reaped the benefits of this housing initiative, which aims to offer affordable pucca homes to families with limited economic means.
For many like her, PMAY has emerged as a pathway to self-sufficiency, replacing years of uncertainty with optimism and a sense of belonging.
Launched on April 1, 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) is a key mission of the Centre under the Ministry of Rural Development, executed in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
PMAY-G aspires to provide a pucca house equipped with basic amenities to all households without shelter and those residing in kutcha or dilapidated homes.
This initiative addresses the rural housing scarcity and works to alleviate the housing shortfall in rural regions, significantly contributing to the objective of "Housing for All".
Beneficiaries are identified through Socio-Economic and Caste Census data, validated by Gram Sabhas.
The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the continuation of PMAY-G from 2024 to 2028, targeting the construction of an additional two crore houses.
