Mumbai, March 17 (NationPress) Following a recent crackdown on drug traffickers in Nagpur's Motibag area, the State Government is set to enforce a 'Zero Tolerance' policy against narcotics. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis proclaimed in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that rigorous measures will be enacted, including the seizure of assets belonging to those participating in these illicit activities.
The discourse began with member Pravin Datke, who raised concerns about the raids on residences of drug traffickers in Motibag, where significant quantities of marijuana and firearms were confiscated. CM Fadnavis stated that cases have been filed under various provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), 1999. “To enhance the effectiveness of anti-drug operations, an Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) was established on August 31, 2023. This initiative has been expanded to all police stations statewide and reinforced by the creation of additional positions.
The government is not merely registering cases but is also focusing on tracing both 'forward' and 'backward' links to dismantle the entire supply chain. Coordination with the Central Government and other states for intelligence sharing has facilitated action against both interstate and international drug networks,” the Chief Minister stated.
He also asserted that any police personnel found with direct or indirect connections to drug cases will be subject to immediate dismissal rather than just suspension.
Addressing the critical issue of minors involved in drug trafficking, he revealed that a proposal will be submitted to the Central Government to reduce the legal age for prosecution in such cases from 18 to 16 years.
