Did BJP-ruled Assam Get Excluded from the SIR Exercise?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 4 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of intentionally excluding poll-bound Assam from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise as the BJP governs the Northeastern state.
"Assembly elections are set for four states: Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. However, the commission only announced SIR for the three opposition-led states while ignoring Assam. If they hold authority, they should first conduct SIR in North-East India," the Chief Minister stated following a major rally in Kolkata opposing the SIR.
She argued that the BJP is "scared" of the Bengalis as it realizes they will never yield to its "pressure tactics".
"Though they managed to win elections in other states through such tactics, they failed to do so in West Bengal. This time, they are desperate to seize power by removing the names of numerous genuine voters under the pretext of SIR," she added.
According to her, "if the current voters' list is flawed, then the Union Government lacks legitimacy, as the NDA was elected in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls based on this list."
She also criticized the ECI for its "unwillingness" to recognize the AADHAAR card as a valid document in SIR. "If that’s the case, then why did you charge people for AADHAAR cards? Why make it mandatory to link AADHAAR cards with bank accounts?" the Chief Minister questioned.
She further stated that the sole mission of the current Union government is to harass people, citing demonetization as an example.
"Many suffered and even died waiting in bank queues. They claimed demonetization was necessary to eradicate black money, but that never happened," she remarked.
During the event, Trinamool Congress general secretary and party Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee asserted that the 2026 West Bengal election would primarily focus on defeating the BJP, not just ensuring the Trinamool Congress's victory.
"We will not yield to New Delhi's pressure tactics. If even one genuine voter's name is removed from the voters' list post-SIR, Trinamool Congress will escalate the movement to the national capital," he warned.
Notably, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar recently stated that Assam has distinct citizenship rules; hence, separate revision orders will be issued for the state.
