Kolkata, July 1 (NationPress) Following backlash for labeling the Kasba law college student rape case as a "minor" incident on Tuesday, West Bengal Irrigation Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia addressed the media, asserting that his remarks, which had no connection to the incident, were distorted by certain media outlets.
"Our party, the Trinamool Congress, unequivocally condemns the Kasba incident. I personally condemn it as well. The police acted swiftly and made immediate arrests. Our Chief Minister does not tolerate such occurrences. I want to clarify that my earlier statements were not about the Kasba incident. They have been misrepresented and tied to this tragic event in a bid to tarnish my reputation. I want to emphasize -- I strongly condemn this incident," the Minister stated.
The incident involving the law student being raped on her college grounds in Kasba, Kolkata, has sparked widespread controversy.
Earlier on Tuesday, during a medical practitioners' event, Bhunia mentioned that any "small" incident in West Bengal tends to be exaggerated.
When reporters inquired about the "small" incident he was referencing, Bhunia responded: "Everything. Numerous incidents happen across the country. The terrorists involved in the tourist massacre at Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam are still at large. Yet in Bengal, any minor incident is magnified. Our Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, oversees everything. Regarding the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation has made no more progress than the state administration's actions."
His comments drew severe criticism from leaders of the BJP.
BJP's IT Cell Chief and central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, released a statement on Tuesday asserting that while the nation grapples with the horrific violence against the 24-year-old law aspirant, Trinamool Congress leaders were busy normalizing rape to gain favor with the Chief Minister.
"Initially, Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra, known for his vulgar remarks, blamed the victim for her situation! Following him, sitting MP Kalyan Banerjee trivialized the incident with the outrageous comment: 'What can be done if a friend rapes a friend?' Now, State Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia, another representative of this corrupt regime, dismissed the atrocity as a "small incident" and urged party members to overlook it and move on, relying on Mamata Banerjee's silence and implied endorsement," Malviya stated.
