New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar on their death anniversary, recognized as Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day.
The trio of freedom fighters faced execution by the British on March 23, 1931, for their steadfast resistance against colonial oppression.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed, "Today, our nation commemorates the profound sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev. Their brave quest for liberty and justice continues to motivate us all."
In a video address, he emphasized their significant role in India's fight for independence, recounting a childhood episode of Bhagat Singh.
"Taking an oath on this sacred land, our heroes battled for freedom. A century ago, a young boy was planting wooden sticks. When questioned by his father about what he was doing, he replied that he was planting guns. Upon being asked what he would do with them, he asserted he would use them to liberate his homeland. That courageous child was none other than Shaheed Bhagat Singh," PM Modi remarked.
He added that even after many years, the legacy of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev remains deeply rooted in the hearts of every young Indian.
Quoting a Hindu shloka, he stated, "Neither weapons can sever him, nor fire can incinerate him." Such are the individuals who offer their lives for the nation. On Shaheed Diwas, I extend my tribute on behalf of the grateful nation to all the valiant men and women who gave everything for the country.
March 23, though a day of mourning in Indian history, serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of India's freedom fighters. It stands as a tribute to all those who gave their lives in the struggle for independence, inspiring generations to value and protect the hard-earned freedom of the nation.
