Is the India-US Trade Agreement a Historic Milestone?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) Leaders of the ruling NDA expressed strong support on Tuesday for the India-US trade agreement, heralding it as a transformative milestone that promises to greatly enhance India’s economy, support MSMEs, and elevate its position in global trade. They dismissed opposition critiques, labeling the Congress party as negative and incapable of recognizing positive national advancements.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal characterized the agreement as a significant achievement between two of the world’s largest democracies. He stated, “This is an incredibly historic deal between India and the US. With this agreement, India’s small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and FMCG, will enjoy improved access to the US market,” he conveyed to IANS.
In response to the Congress party's criticism, Khandelwal made a pointed remark, stating, “This perspective may belong to the Congress party, but we all are aware of their current state. They are engulfed in despair and negativity. Regardless of the positive changes in the country, the Congress consistently fails to acknowledge them.”
Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, national spokesperson for JD(U), noted that this deal is a testament to India’s increasing global economic influence and strategic diplomacy. He remarked, “India’s significant progress is evident from strategic shifts. When India finalized the FTA with the European Union, it became clear to the United States that India is emerging as an economic powerhouse that they cannot disregard.”
BJP MLA Devayani Farande also lauded the agreement, attributing the tariff reductions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “I wish to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi; the Trump administration has reduced tariffs from 50% to 18%. This is a win for Make in India,” she stated.
NDA leaders asserted that this agreement will serve as a substantial catalyst for Indian manufacturing, exports, job creation, and entrepreneurship, particularly aiding MSMEs looking for greater access to international markets. They emphasized that lower tariffs and enhanced market access will strengthen the competitiveness of Indian products abroad and solidify India’s role in global supply chains.
The trade agreement was reached on Monday following a discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. Under the terms, the US has reduced tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, while India has agreed to relax certain trade barriers on American products.
PM Modi welcomed the development, asserting that lower tariffs on 'Made in India' products would unlock new opportunities for Indian businesses and youth, further enhancing collaboration between the world’s two largest democracies. The government has presented this agreement as a crucial step towards broadening India’s global economic presence.
