Owaisi Urges Modi Government to Address US Navy's Attack on Iranian Ship
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 6 (NationPress) AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has called on the Indian government to issue a definitive statement condemning the sinking of an Iranian warship by the US Navy near Indian waters. Owaisi emphasized the need for clarity on whether the Trump administration notified India prior to the attack on the Iranian vessel.
"There are numerous unresolved issues surrounding the US Navy's actions against the Iranian ship so close to our waters. The government must provide answers, yet both the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister have remained silent. This constitutes a failure of their constitutional duty to the nation's citizens," Owaisi stated on 'X'.
He questioned, "Did the Indian administration receive prior notification from the Trump administration before a nuclear submarine was deployed near our waters and the conflict zone was expanded? Given our position as a member of Quad and a strategic ally of the US, if this sets a precedent for the Chinese navy to operate in these areas, will the Modi government continue to remain mute? Is anyone considering the repercussions of this display of cowardice?"
The AIMIM president further inquired about the government's stance if the US were to target two Iranian ships nearby. Would the Modi administration continue to bury its head in the sand?
"This undermines India’s long-established image as a strategically sovereign nation, rendering us inconsequential in international discussions. I urge the government to publicly condemn this incident and hold a press conference to elaborate on the US's attack on Iran," he added.
A US submarine reportedly sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of 87 sailors.
The Iranian vessel was returning from Visakhapatnam after participating in an exercise organized by the Indian Navy last month when it was struck by the US submarine early Wednesday morning.
