Authorities discovered that the kidnappers had threatened the victims with snakebites, leading to the recovery of three snakes from the crime scene.
The police apprehended one of the alleged kidnappers, Pruthibiraj Sahu, from the K Nuagaon area of Ganjam district during the operation.
Following a complaint from one of the victims, Amarjit Samanta Singhara (24) from Pahala in Bhubaneshwar, the police initiated an investigation.
According to a senior police official on Monday, Sahu and his accomplices conspired to lure Singhara and his three friends to Berhampur under the pretext of financing a project for a finance company named Foreminix. Ind. Pvt. Ltd.
On January 23, Singhara, along with finance agent Rabindra Kumar from Delhi and two others from Cuttack, arrived in Berhampur.
Shortly after their arrival, the suspects transported the victims to Golanthara using two vehicles and unlawfully confined them in a building. The kidnappers demanded Rs 2 crore as ransom and threatened to kill them if their demands were not met.
Police sources revealed that the kidnappers assaulted the victims during their captivity and later moved them to Kerandimal Jungle in the Chikiti area, continuing to abuse them and insisting that they would not be released until the ransom was paid.
On the morning of January 26, Singhara managed to escape from his captors and reached the Chikiti Tahasil Office, where he reported the entire incident to the staff.
Upon receiving the information, the K. Nuagaon police swiftly responded to the office and successfully rescued Singhara.
Subsequently, the police, accompanied by Singhara, went to the location of confinement and freed the finance agent and the other victims.
During the rescue operation, authorities also discovered three snakes used to intimidate the victims. The forest department has been notified and is taking appropriate legal action regarding the possession of the snakes. A case has been registered based on the written report, and the investigation is ongoing,” the police official stated.
