Is Rahul Gandhi the Essential Leader for the Country?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) Congress leader Rashid Alvi stated on Monday that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is essential for the nation, claiming that no other leader challenges Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he does.
His comments followed a sharp critique from former Union Minister Shakeel Ahmad, who resigned from the Congress in November 2025, labeling Rahul Gandhi as a “darpok” (coward) and insecure.
In an interview with IANS, Rashid Alvi remarked, “Rahul Gandhi is the need of the country. He is the leader with the largest mass following within the Congress. Without him, the Congress cannot remain the Congress. People may have different opinions about him, but the manner in which Rahul Gandhi confronts Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unmatched in the country. No other leader is doing this.”
Alvi further accused the BJP of persistently blaming the Congress and trying to corner it on communal matters.
“I am stating this clearly -- the BJP always attributes blame to the Congress. Whenever a Muslim's name arises, the Congress is accused of appeasement. This instills a sense of fear not just within the Congress but among all secular parties across the nation,” he explained.
He added that secular parties do not oppose Muslims but often hesitate to express themselves openly due to the BJP’s allegations.
“They prefer not to give the BJP any grounds to accuse them of appeasement. However, the ones who ultimately suffer are the Muslims. The BJP criticizes them, and others choose to remain silent,” Alvi told IANS.
Regarding the Vande Mataram issue, Rashid Alvi stated there is no harm in individuals singing it voluntarily.
“If the Indian government and the Prime Minister wish to sing Vande Mataram on its 150th anniversary, that is their prerogative. Anyone in India who wishes to sing it has the right to do so. However, it should not be imposed on anyone,” he asserted.
