New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) In a significant advancement for aviation infrastructure and connectivity within the Kashmir Valley, the government has officially sanctioned the establishment of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport, with an anticipated investment of Rs 1,677 crore. This project was greenlit by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and encompasses the construction of barracks for security personnel.

Spanning across 73.18 acres, the new Civil Enclave will boast a modern terminal building of 71,500 square metres (including 20,659 square metres of the existing structure), engineered to accommodate 2,900 passengers during peak hours and designed for an annual capacity of 10 million passengers (MPPA).

The expanded apron will provide space for 15 aircraft parking bays, which includes one widebody (Code E) (with 9 existing and 6 new bays), while the 3,658m x 45m runway will continue to be operated by the IAF. Furthermore, the construction will include a multi-level car parking facility capable of holding 1,000 cars, as detailed in a cabinet communique.

The new terminal is set to showcase a seamless fusion of contemporary design and the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir, integrating traditional features like intricate woodwork and local craftsmanship, while ensuring operational efficiency through efficient passenger processing areas, spacious lounges, and advanced security and check-in amenities.

Managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force, the airport was designated an international airport in 2005 and is situated approximately 12 km from the city of Srinagar.

Beyond mere infrastructural development, this initiative is anticipated to significantly enhance tourism and economic growth by improving access to renowned sites, including Dal Lake, the Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens. This will generate job opportunities, stimulate investments, and solidify Srinagar’s stature as a top tourist and economic hub.

The Civil Enclave development signifies a transformative leap towards providing world-class infrastructure, better passenger amenities, and enhanced connectivity, while highlighting the cultural and natural beauty of Kashmir to a global audience.
