Tensions Rise in Hubballi Over Alleged Love Jihad Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Hubballi (Karnataka), April 3 (NationPress) unrest emerged on Friday due to accusations of "love jihad" involving a Muslim youth and a Hindu girl. This situation has sparked violent clashes between members of Hindu organizations and the boy's family.
Protests escalated as members of Hindu groups gathered outside the Old Hubballi police station, with hundreds demanding stringent measures against the accused youth.
Reports indicate the youth, named Sameer, residing in Vijayanagar and working as a gym trainer, was seen in the company of the girl, whom he reportedly met at the gym.
Hindu organization members intervened, claiming the relationship constituted love jihad. They took Sameer into their custody and subsequently handed him over to the Old Hubballi police.
The scenario worsened when Sameer's family allegedly entered the girl's home, accusing her family of abducting him and causing a disturbance. They reportedly attempted to assault during the confrontation.
According to police statements, the series of events started when the girl's family confronted Sameer at his residence, questioning him about his relationship with their daughter. Hindu group members then took him and delivered him to the police.
In retaliation, Sameer's relatives reportedly invaded the girl's home, leading to further altercations. Numerous individuals from both sides suffered injuries and were taken to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar visited the hospital, engaging in discussions with both families.
He noted that no official complaints had been filed thus far and that both parties were culpable for resorting to violence rather than seeking police assistance.
Meanwhile, Sameer's family dismissed the allegations of love jihad, asserting that the two had known each other for three years and were in a consensual relationship.
Sameer's sister even challenged the claims, stating she possesses numerous photographs showing the Hindu girl had been acquainted with him for a significant time and that her family should not portray themselves as victims.
Hubballi has been on edge since the stabbing death of Neha Hiremath, a student at KLE Technological University, in April 2024.
The alleged perpetrator, confirmed as Fayaz, was reportedly familiar with her and had been harassing her after she spurned his advances.
This incident instigated widespread protests, with several Hindu groups labeling it a case of love jihad.
Authorities apprehended the suspect shortly after the event and initiated a murder case.
