Amaravati, July 14 (NationPress) - A tragic incident unfolded in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh where nine labourers lost their lives and ten others were injured when a truck carrying a load of mangoes overturned. The accident took place on Sunday night at Reddy Cheruvu Katta in Pullampeta mandal, approximately 60 km from Kadapa town.
According to law enforcement, the labourers, who were sitting atop the mangoes, were tragically crushed when the truck overturned onto a lake bund. Among the deceased, there were five women, and the injured were promptly admitted to a government facility in Rajampet.
The truck driver, who escaped with his life, reported to the police that he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a collision with an oncoming car.
A total of 21 daily-wage labourers hailing from Railay Koduru and Venkatagiri mandals had traveled to pluck mangoes from farms in Esukapalli and nearby villages. The truck, loaded with mangoes, was en route to the Railway Koduru market with the labourers precariously sitting on top of the fruity cargo.
They were crushed beneath 30-40 tonnes of mangoes. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, employing a JCB to assist in the rescue operation.
Of the nine deceased, eight died immediately on the scene. Their identities have been confirmed as Gajjala Durgaiah (32), Gajjala Lakshmi Devi (36), Gajjala Ramana (42), Gajjala Srinu (32), Radha (39), Venkata Subbamma (37), Chittemma (25), and Subba Ratnamma (45). Another worker, Munichandra (38), succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Rajampet.
The injured ten were taken to a local hospital, with some later transferred to RIMS in Kadapa for advanced medical care.
Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the accident that claimed the lives of innocent labourers. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
The minister instructed officials to ensure the best medical treatment for the injured and discussed the accident's cause, urging measures to prevent future occurrences.
District in-charge Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy also voiced his shock regarding the incident, affirming that the government would provide comprehensive support to the victims' families.
