Bhopal, Jan 23 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Uma Bharti, criticized the Congress party on Thursday, asserting that if the historic party had genuinely engaged with Ambedkar's ideas, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) would not have come into existence.
She remarked that the rise of BSP was due to Dalits and other backward communities losing their trust in Congress, which had maintained power in the largest state, Uttar Pradesh, for numerous years.
According to her, the success of BSP marked the onset of Congress's decline.
“Currently, the BSP is gradually losing its political influence as it has not met the expectations of those who supported it. Consequently, Dalit and other backward classes are now aligning with the BJP,” Bharti stated while addressing Congress's accusations against BJP concerning Ambedkar.
During a media interaction at her official residence on Shyamla Hill in Bhopal, the former Chief Minister emphasized that while launching a political campaign from Ambedkar's birthplace is a separate matter, Congress lacks the authority to demand an apology from BJP regarding Ambedkar.
“If anyone ought to apologize concerning Ambedkar, it is the Congress, as it has not fulfilled the aspirations of impoverished individuals despite being in power for many decades,” she further remarked.
Bharti's comments came just days before Congress is scheduled to initiate a nationwide campaign—'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan'—to rally support from Ambedkar's followers on January 27, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.
This campaign will be inaugurated in the presence of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress President.
The event will feature participation from all members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), along with former and current Chief Ministers and senior leaders of the party.
This marks the first major political event organized by Congress in Madhya Pradesh following a significant defeat in the state Assembly elections in November 2023, which led to the replacement of veteran leader Kamal Nath with Jitu Patwari as the new head of the state unit.
Congress also faced a complete loss in all 29 Lok Sabha seats to the BJP in the 2024 general elections. This will be the Congress’s inaugural significant event in Madhya Pradesh under Jitu Patwar's leadership.
