Women Troopers of BSF Thwart Smuggling Attempt at India-Bangladesh Border

Agartala, Jan 12 (NationPress) The female soldiers of the Border Security Force (BSF) took decisive action on Sunday, firing shots to effectively thwart a significant smuggling operation of contrabands along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, officials reported.
A spokesperson for the BSF stated that the Mahila Praharis responded to a threatening situation by firing two rounds from their firearms when a large group of smugglers, armed with sharp weapons, attempted to forcibly execute a smuggling operation in the Sepahijala district of Tripura.
“The vigilant Mahila Praharis successfully disrupted the major smuggling attempt in the BOP Ashabari area, leading to the recovery of a substantial quantity of sugar and other contrabands,” the spokesperson noted.
In an effort to foster relations, Inspector General (IG) of BSF's Tripura frontier Ashwani Kumar Sharma visited the Integrated Check Post in Manughat and offered a fruit basket to the troops of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
During his three-day inspection in Unakoti and Dhalai districts of northern Tripura, the BSF IG reviewed the operational readiness of the border security forces.
Sharma, who recently assumed command of the Tripura frontier, received briefings from battalion commanders regarding the current border situation.
While addressing BSF personnel during a Sainik Sammelan at BOP Morachera, the IG commended their unwavering commitment and stressed the importance of remaining vigilant given the ongoing circumstances along the India-Bangladesh border.
In a separate operation on Saturday, BSF personnel stationed at BOP Gaurnagar in Khowai district apprehended three Bangladeshi individuals attempting to illegally cross into Bangladesh from India.
The detained individuals are residents of Brahmanbaria district in Bangladesh.
During interrogation, the intruders disclosed the identities of Indian and Bangladeshi agents facilitating their border crossing.
In addition to employing non-lethal tactics, BSF forces successfully thwarted multiple infiltration and smuggling attempts, rescuing 10 cattle and seizing 1,000 kg of sugar, 16 kg of ganja, a large quantity of clothing, medicines, and other contraband valued at over Rs 50 lakh.
The spokesperson emphasized that BSF is maintaining a heightened state of alert along the international border to prevent infiltration and cross-border crimes.
Following the unrest in Bangladesh that began in June-July, the BSF has intensified its operations along the 856-km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to curb infiltration, exfiltration, and trans-border crimes, including the smuggling of contraband.
Tripura, bordered by Bangladesh on three sides, has parts that remain unfenced due to local disputes over land and demarcation issues.
Last year, the BSF made significant arrests, including 55 Rohingya migrants, 620 Bangladeshi nationals, and 260 Indian nationals, including human traffickers during various operations.
