Agartala, June 10 (NationPress) The Tripura Police apprehended the father and brother of Youth Congress leader Shahjahan Islam on Monday due to his offensive remarks directed at Chief Minister Manik Saha, the state government, and other BJP leaders in relation to the festivities of Eid-al-Adha celebrated on June 7.
Congress officials contend that a faction of troublemakers, allegedly supported by the BJP, assaulted Shahjahan Islam's residence in Shantipara.
The President of the BJP’s state minority morcha and former Minister Billal Mia lodged a complaint at the West Agartala police station regarding Shahjahan Islam’s disparaging comments about the Chief Minister on social media.
According to Kiran Kumar K, the West Tripura district Superintendent of Police, the arrested individuals—Khairul Islam and Najrul Miah—were brought before a local court on Monday and subsequently placed in judicial custody until June 23.
The BJP alleged that Khairul Islam and Najrul Miah attacked their activists who had come to their home to protest Shahjahan Islam’s derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister and party leaders.
Billal Mia stated that Shahjahan Islam made insulting remarks regarding the Chief Minister and the state government via social media.
“In light of this, we filed a complaint seeking his (Shahjahan Islam's) arrest. On one hand, there has been an attempt to tarnish the state government’s image and on the other, there is a plot to incite unrest among communities—all evident from his Facebook post,” Billal Mia informed the media.
The BJP also organized a protest rally on Monday against the offensive comments made by the Congress youth leader.
Shahjahan Islam’s remarks ignited controversy, leading to numerous netizens, including BJP supporters, demanding action against him.
Tripura state Congress President Asish Kumar Saha claimed that over 100 BJP and Yuva Morcha supporters stormed Shahjahan Islam’s home at Shantipara late Sunday night, vandalizing the property.
His parents were reportedly assaulted, and his wife was physically harmed, Saha reported to the media. Sudip Roy Barman, a member of the Congress Working Committee and former Minister, voiced strong opposition to the attack after visiting Shahjahan Islam's residence.
Former Minister and previous state Congress President Birajit Sinha also denounced the incident, asserting that such acts of violence against homes must cease.
As tensions escalated in the area, where the Chief Minister’s ancestral residence is located, a significant number of security personnel were stationed to avert further escalation.
In his police statement, Shahjahan Islam disclosed that he was assaulted by “thugs” upon returning home from the state Congress office on Sunday night.
He further alleged that these assailants, reportedly armed, intended to kill him but failed as he had secured himself in a room; they then attacked his parents and wife.
